Gastronomy and wine

The basis of living in Vinodol from ancient times was the land. It was fertile, but there was not much of it. The settlers were sowing wheat, barley, sorghum and millet, planting potatoes, cabbage, turnip, carrot, onions etc. People also engaged in cattle breeding, especially of cows and sheep.
The most common dishes were made of cultivated vegetables, such as beans, potatoes, pickled cabbage, turnip, seakale beet. Porridge and polenta were inevitably on the daily menu. Meat, on the other hand, was very rarely on the menu. One of the most popular autochthonous dishes is the bribirski prisnac. The menu was fulfilled by self-grown plants – asparagus, dandelion, fennel, dandelion greens, lamb’s-quarters, and wild fruit such as sorb-apple, strawberries, raspberries, hawthorn, rose hip etc. The area is also favourable for fruit growing, especially of cherries , figs and grape-wine and excellent brandy is made of these fruits.
Grape-wine has been grown in Vinodol ever since the ancient times, when it was brought here by the Romans. Since then until the 20th century, Vinodol is filled with grape-wine. However, at that time, grape-wine had been affected by the phylloxera blight, which destroyed the plantations, and this subsequently led to the great emigration from Vinodol. The plantations of grape-wine, especially of the autochthonous sort called Žlahtina have been revived only recently and the production of wine is growing again.

THE CASTLES

In the area of the former Vinodol principality, the princes Frankopan had built nine castles, and their representatives were signatories of the Vinodol Codex from 1288. In today's Vinodol area, there are still three of the nine existing castles – in Bribir, Grižane, and Drivenik, and another one, dating back to ancient times – Badanj. Badanj was erected on the foundations of an ancient fort and it towered above the valley spreading over the very heart of Vinodol towards the sea. The castle of Drivenik is the most preserved and the most attractive castle of Vinodol, which is, along with St. Dujam's and St. Stephen's Church, situated on the hill overlooking the Tribalj Lake. The castle of Grižane was built on the rocky cliffs, which the locals like to call «griže», after which the castle was named. Only the remnants of the walls of the castle of Grižane are reminders of its glorious past today. Out of what used to be the castle of Bribir, only the quadrangular tower and a part of the town wall from 1302 were preserved, because the people of Bribir in the 19th century built a school and the town hall where the former castle was located.

TRADITION – FOLK COSTUME, MUSIC, MESOPUST (CARNIVAL), ARCHITECTURE
The traditional heritage of Vinodol is rich and interesting and it originates from the way of life through the centuries, as well as from various historical influences. The ladies' folk costume of Vinodol is black, decorated with lace, embroidery and red details, while men wear white folk costume, embroidered by the red or black wool. People of Vinodol cherish the tradition of singing «through thick and thin», and the traditional instrument following folk songs is Istrian long flute. Next to this flute, other traditional instruments are fidulice, mišnice and tamburitzas. Traditional architecture of Vinodol is conditioned by the climate, the ground, way of life and available finances. Stone is the basic material which was used to build the houses of Vinodol with court-yards. Distinctive entrances into court-yards and houses – portuni (doorways) - are especially interesting.
Mesopust (carnival) is one of the oldest folk traditions and it refers to getting rid of winter, evil and to the coming of spring. Joys of carnival goes on from Epiphany until Ash Wednesday, and the fortunes and misfortunes which marked the previous year are written down in the form of a funny octosyllabic verse – the sentence, which is read on the day of the mesopust.
